Roundtable Discussion on “Geopolitics of Water: Bangladesh Perspective” on Wednesday, 29 January 2025

The Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) organised a roundtable discussion titled “Geopolitics of Water: Bangladesh Perspective” on Wednesday, 29 January 2025, at the BIISS Auditorium.

The roundtable focused on the strategic importance of water in regional geopolitics and examined its implications for Bangladesh’s national security, economic development, environmental sustainability, and foreign policy. The discussions highlighted the significance of transboundary river management, water diplomacy, climate change, upstream and downstream cooperation, and the equitable sharing of shared water resources in ensuring regional stability and sustainable development.

The event brought together policymakers, diplomats, academicians, researchers, government officials, water resource experts, and eminent scholars, who exchanged views on the challenges and opportunities associated with water governance in South Asia. Participants emphasised the need to strengthen regional cooperation, promote science-based policymaking, enhance institutional capacity, and pursue effective water diplomacy to address shared water-related challenges and safeguard Bangladesh’s long-term national interests.

The discussion concluded by underscoring the importance of collaborative approaches to transboundary water management and reinforcing Bangladesh’s commitment to peaceful dialogue and regional cooperation in achieving sustainable and equitable water resource governance.
