The Bangladesh Institute of
International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) organised a Country Lecture
Series titled "Recent Developments in Bangladesh–India Bilateral
Relations and Its Prospects" in September 2015 at the BIISS
Auditorium.
The lecture was delivered by H.
E. Mr Pankaj Saran, High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, as the Guest
Speaker. The programme brought together senior government officials,
members of the diplomatic corps, policymakers, academics, researchers, military
officials, representatives of think tanks, development partner organisations,
media professionals, and students to discuss the evolving dynamics of
Bangladesh–India relations and explore future avenues of bilateral cooperation.
In his lecture, High
Commissioner Pankaj Saran highlighted the significant progress achieved in
Bangladesh–India relations in recent years, describing the bilateral
partnership as one of mutual trust, friendship, and shared prosperity. He noted
that the relationship had expanded beyond traditional diplomacy to encompass
cooperation in trade and investment, connectivity, energy, water resources,
security, education, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.
The Guest Speaker emphasised the
growing importance of regional connectivity in strengthening economic
integration and promoting sustainable development in South Asia. He discussed
ongoing initiatives in road, rail, inland waterways, coastal shipping, and
cross-border energy cooperation, observing that improved connectivity would
facilitate trade, tourism, investment, and greater interaction between the
peoples of the two neighbouring countries.
The lecture also underscored the
importance of continued collaboration in addressing common challenges such as
border management, counter-terrorism, climate change, disaster management, and
regional economic cooperation. The speaker stressed that enhanced diplomatic
dialogue and sustained political goodwill would help unlock the full potential
of the bilateral partnership and contribute to peace, stability, and prosperity
in the region.
The programme was attended by
senior government officials, members of the diplomatic community, academics,
researchers, representatives of civil society and development organisations,
media personnel, and students from various universities. During the interactive
discussion session, participants shared valuable questions, comments,
suggestions, and observations on the future trajectory of Bangladesh–India
relations and the opportunities for strengthening regional cooperation.
The event concluded with a
reaffirmation of the longstanding friendship between Bangladesh and India and a
shared commitment to further deepening bilateral cooperation through enhanced
connectivity, stronger economic engagement, expanded cultural exchanges, and
closer collaboration in regional and multilateral forums.
