India–Bangladesh relations: policy insights and regional cooperation.
The Bangladesh Institute of
International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) organised a Country Lecture
Series titled "India and India–Bangladesh Relations" on 07
April 2014 at the BIISS Auditorium.
The lecture was delivered by H.
E. Mr Pankaj Saran, High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, as the Guest
Speaker. The programme brought together senior government officials,
members of the diplomatic corps, policymakers, academics, researchers, military
officials, representatives of think tanks, development partner organisations,
media professionals, and students to discuss the evolving nature of
India–Bangladesh relations and the prospects for strengthening bilateral
cooperation.
In his lecture, High
Commissioner Pankaj Saran highlighted the historical foundations of the
Bangladesh–India relationship, built upon shared history, cultural affinity,
geographical proximity, and the spirit of cooperation forged during
Bangladesh's Liberation War. He emphasised that the bilateral relationship had
evolved into a broad-based partnership encompassing political dialogue,
economic cooperation, trade and investment, security, connectivity, energy,
education, and cultural exchanges.
The Guest Speaker underscored the
importance of enhancing regional connectivity through improved road, rail,
inland waterways, coastal shipping, and cross-border infrastructure. He noted
that greater connectivity would facilitate trade, investment, tourism, and
people-to-people contacts while contributing to economic growth and regional
integration across South Asia.
The lecture also highlighted the
expanding scope of cooperation in energy, border management, water resources,
counter-terrorism, disaster management, and sub-regional initiatives. The
speaker stressed that sustained political goodwill, mutual trust, and regular
high-level engagement would enable both countries to address common challenges
and further strengthen their strategic partnership for the benefit of their
peoples.
Participants discussed the future
trajectory of Bangladesh–India relations in the context of regional economic
integration and shared development goals. The interactive discussion focused on
opportunities for deepening cooperation in trade facilitation, investment,
education, technology, climate resilience, and regional connectivity, while
reinforcing peace, stability, and prosperity in South Asia.
The programme concluded with an
engaging question-and-answer session during which participants shared valuable
questions, comments, suggestions, and observations on various aspects of
Bangladesh–India relations. The event reaffirmed BIISS's commitment to
promoting informed dialogue on regional affairs and strengthening understanding
of Bangladesh's bilateral relations with its neighbouring countries through its
Country Lecture Series.
