The Bangladesh Institute of
International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) organised the launching ceremony
of its annual publication, National Security Bangladesh 2008, on 24
November 2009 at the BIISS Auditorium.
The book was formally unveiled by
Advocate Shahara Khatun, MP, Honourable Minister for Home Affairs,
Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, who graced the occasion as
the Chief Guest. Dr Iftekharuzzaman, Executive Director of Transparency
International Bangladesh (TIB), reviewed the publication as the Book
Reviewer. The event was also attended by Major General Muhammed Firdaus
Mian, psc, Chairman of the Board of Governors, BIISS, and Major General
Sheikh Md Monirul Islam, ndc, psc, Director General of BIISS, along with
senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, academics,
researchers, security experts, military officials, media representatives, and
distinguished guests.
In his remarks, the Chief
Guest, Advocate Shahara Khatun, underscored the importance of rigorous
research and informed policy dialogue in addressing the evolving national
security challenges facing Bangladesh. She commended BIISS for its continued
contribution to strategic studies and policy research through the publication
of the National Security Bangladesh series, which provides valuable
insights for policymakers, academics, and security practitioners.
Reviewing the publication, Dr
Iftekharuzzaman highlighted the multidisciplinary nature of the book and
its significance in analysing Bangladesh's security environment from political,
economic, social, environmental, and strategic perspectives. He noted that the
publication offers comprehensive assessments of the major developments and
security challenges that shaped Bangladesh during 2008, while also
providing thoughtful policy recommendations for addressing emerging national
and regional issues.
As the second volume in
the National Security Bangladesh series, the publication presents a
broad range of analyses on contemporary security concerns, including
governance, law and order, economic security, regional cooperation,
international relations, environmental sustainability, and non-traditional
security challenges. The volume reflects BIISS's commitment to producing
evidence-based research that contributes to informed policymaking and strategic
thinking in Bangladesh.
The programme concluded with an
interactive discussion session, during which participants exchanged views on
the evolving concept of national security and the importance of
multidisciplinary research in responding to complex security challenges. The
book launch reaffirmed BIISS's role as Bangladesh's premier strategic think
tank and highlighted its ongoing commitment to fostering informed debate and
generating policy-oriented research on issues of national, regional, and global
significance.
