Comprehensive Partnership on 21 October 2014
The Bangladesh Institute of
International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) organised a Country Lecture
Series titled "Japan–Bangladesh Relations: A Comprehensive
Partnership" on 21 October 2014 at the BIISS Auditorium.
The lecture was delivered by H.
E. Mr Shiro Sadoshima, Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh, as the Guest
Speaker. The programme brought together senior government officials,
members of the diplomatic corps, policymakers, academics, researchers, military
officials, representatives of development partner organisations, think tanks,
media professionals, and students to discuss the growing strategic partnership
between Bangladesh and Japan and explore new avenues for bilateral cooperation.
In his lecture, Ambassador
Shiro Sadoshima highlighted the longstanding friendship between Bangladesh
and Japan, describing it as a relationship founded on mutual trust, shared
values, and common aspirations for peace, prosperity, and sustainable
development. He noted that Japan has remained one of Bangladesh's closest
development partners, making significant contributions to the country's
socio-economic progress through Official Development Assistance (ODA),
infrastructure development, human resource development, and technology
transfer.
The Guest Speaker emphasised the
importance of strengthening the comprehensive partnership through expanded
cooperation in trade and investment, industrial development, infrastructure,
energy, transport, education, science and technology, disaster risk reduction,
and environmental sustainability. He also highlighted Japan's support for
improving regional connectivity and fostering inclusive economic growth, which
would further enhance Bangladesh's role as an emerging economic hub in Asia.
The lecture explored the growing
opportunities for collaboration in public-private partnerships, manufacturing,
information and communication technology, innovation, and capacity building.
Ambassador Sadoshima stressed that stronger economic engagement, increased
private sector investment, and deeper people-to-people exchanges would further
reinforce the enduring partnership between the two countries.
The programme also highlighted
the importance of regional peace, stability, and cooperation in achieving
sustainable development. Participants discussed the prospects for expanding
Bangladesh–Japan collaboration in addressing common global challenges, including
climate change, disaster resilience, energy security, maritime cooperation, and
regional connectivity.
The lecture concluded with an
interactive discussion session during which participants shared valuable
questions, comments, suggestions, and observations on the future direction of
Bangladesh–Japan relations. The event reaffirmed the shared commitment of
Bangladesh and Japan to strengthening their comprehensive partnership through
enhanced diplomatic engagement, sustainable economic cooperation, and long-term
collaboration for regional peace, stability, and prosperity.
