Synergies with Growing Strategic Competition in the Indo-Pacific
The Indo-Pacific has emerged as a
central arena of global strategic competition, driven by shifting power
dynamics, evolving security challenges, and increasing geopolitical interests
of major and regional actors. As a strategically located country at the
junction of South and Southeast Asia, Bangladesh must continuously assess the
changing security environment and strengthen its national defence capabilities
to protect its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and broader national
interests.
The modernisation of the
Bangladesh Armed Forces, guided by the national vision of developing a capable,
technologically advanced, and professionally skilled military force, has gained
greater significance in this evolving strategic landscape. Efforts to enhance
military preparedness, improve maritime domain awareness, adopt emerging
technologies, and expand defence cooperation provide opportunities to
contribute not only to national security but also to regional peace and
stability.
This seminar seeks to examine the
relationship between Bangladesh Armed Forces modernisation and the intensifying
strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific. It will analyse the strategic
drivers behind defence modernisation, the opportunities and challenges arising
from great-power competition, and Bangladesh’s approach to maintaining
strategic autonomy while engaging constructively with regional and global
partners. The discussion will contribute to a deeper understanding of how
Bangladesh can align its defence development with its long-term security
objectives and its commitment to a peaceful, stable, and prosperous
Indo-Pacific region.
